The worldwide travels of paperThe manufacture of paper is based on renewable resources but the process uses large volumes of water, a variety of chemicals and much energy. So our use of paper contributes to our use of fuels and to greenhouse gas emissions which affect the global climate. Recycling can cut the environmental impact by reducing the amount of paper going to landfill sites or being incinerated. However, recycling can only be successful if there is sufficient economic demand for the waste paper and the paper or card made from it. This often necessitates a global approach with the waste paper being sourced from one country and then exported elsewhere to be recycled.
