Mobile phones in TanzaniaTelephone systems in developed countries originally required installation of a network of telephone exchanges and landlines, systems which are prohibitively expensive for developing countries. Mobile phone systems are relatively cheap to install so they are affordable in developing countries. Recently the use of mobile phones has been growing fastest in developing countries, such as Tanzania.

By 2012 there are expected to be over 4.5 billion mobile phone users, out of a global population of 7 billion. Already more than two-thirds of mobile phone users live in developing countries.
