Metals in jewellery worldwideJewellery has been used for thousands of years in different cultures. Jewellery is created by skilful artists and designers working with a range of materials – some of which, like metals, are chemically simple.

The purposes for wearing jewellery vary from society to society and alter over time. The purposes can include:

  • practical uses in clothing such as clasps, pins and buckles
  • body adornment to make people look more attractive
  • symbols to show membership, status and beliefs (religious emblems)
  • protection from feared threats, including disease (charms and amulets)
  • tokens of remembrance, souvenirs
  • the display and storage of wealth.
