| Global food market
Few people probably consider the reasons that year round food choice is even possible (the availability of modern transportation systems and the differing seasons between Northern and Southern hemispheres). The vast distances that some food travels before reaching our supermarkets poses a dilemma for consumers, some of whom are becoming concerned about the environmental impact of the transportation of the produce, so called ‘food miles’. Each food mile is linked to greater CO2 emissions and thus with ‘Global Warming’ but to what extent are consumers prepared to sacrifice their desire for year round choice in return for local and seasonal produce?
